MPT launches 4G in Myanmar

MPT Launches 4G Service in Selected Locations

On October 14th, MPT announced that it has soft launched its 4G network in a certain number of locations in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw.

Awaiting for the future auction on 1800Mhz, MPT is trialing 4G on 2100Mhz, co-sharing with its 3G networks also operating on the same band.

MPT 4G network is available in MPT Sule Branch, Junction Centre Maw Tin, Junction Square Centre and Taw Win Centre as well as in Nay Pyi Taw at Junction Center and Capital Hyper Market.

The service is available for customers with 4G capable devices and SIM. Old 4G non compatible SIM can be swapped at MPT 4G stores in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw.

MPT is the last operator to launch 4G in Myanmar after Ooredoo in May and Telenor in July earlier this year. As new spectrum has not been allocated yet, these 4G launches are mostly marketing events and will not drive any significant performance improvement on the mobile operator networks. 1800Mhz auction will be key to give operators the spectrum needed to truly unleash the 4G performance in their networks.
